You don't need more
Due to my duty work, this is like the 6th time I buy a laptop. The first thing I learned about a laptop is to not to invest a lot of money on it. The reason? Laptops suffers a lot during traveling, turning it on/off too often, electricity peaks, etc. Therefore, sooner or later, if they are not stolen, their parts will start to fail, and you will spend a lot of money in spare parts. That is the reason I decided this time to buy this reasonable offer. Laptop works fine (due to Windows Vista and "only" 1 MB of RAM memory, sometimes is not as fast as you would like, but that is already advertised on this version of Windows. Pre-instaled software is fine, Hard disk capacity is ore than enough. Anyway, if you need more hard disk capacity, is better to invest on an external hard disk (it will last more than your laptop, for sure) but 80 Gb is quite an amount. The wireless connection is very powerful (detects my wireless router faster and easier) and the laptop weight and screen size is just what you need. Therefore, don't waist your money with much powerful laptops, there is no reason to do it, unless you don't move from one spot to another, but in that case buy a desktop.

For $600 is a nice deal
I bought this computer last January. For the price of $600 is really a bargain.
Problems: After two months the web cam only could be used if I was logged to the messenger.
You might want to have it on a cool place because the computer and the ac adaptor become very hot, but I haven't have any failure yet
For the Ram, you might want to consider to at least but another 512mb of memory, you do that, and that machine would fly
No Windows Vista cd is included, that is bad, and for the drivers you must dowload them from the ACER site
But believe me, is a nice deal, still works like the first day (only the webcam issue )
Battery Issue
I bought it in Dec 07 and battery went out of commission in May 08. It wouldn't charge no more than 2%. Also when I start the computer with the battery on it hangs up for A VERY LONG time!
To replace the battery costs [...] There was another user that had a similar issue, and Acer was replacing certain batteries for a known issue. Unfortunately they would not replace mine!! So now I have a mobile DESKTOP.... since I have removed the battery and have it plugged in all the times.
Also 1GB memory is too low and works very very slow. I upgraded to 2GB and works great!
Wifi has a toggle switch (to turn on/off). Even after I disable wifi after few minutes wifi comes back up. I have learned to live with this now, but for this reason I prefer to have a hard on/off switch to turn off wifi whenever I don't need it.
It is said to have 120GB, but I guess someone screwed up on the bytes to GB conversion and computer actually shows only 101.9GB!
Terrible Power Supply Connector
This laptop (Acer 5050) performs well. I have been very pleased with how it runs. The problem is that the power supply adaptor is defective. This happens so often, there is actually an external charger sold for the battery that you can find on amazon. I have had the adaptor connection on the laptop go out twice in 18 months. What's worse is unlike HP laptops, there is no docking station port to get around this problem. Acer will temperarely fix the problem for 400$, and is very unsympathetic in regards to helping me or their other customers find a solution. For this reason, I unfortunately had to give an otherwise good product a 1 star :(
Too bad because this would otherwise be a cost effective laptop, but with the mounting repair bills, it quickly becomes one of the most expensive laptops one will ever own.

Fantasmagorical
This is a phenomenal laptop for the price. I did massive amounts of research and discovered that this one was the best machine for the price. It includes a ton of features that make it that much better. More specifically I am referring to the blu ray drive and the hdmi port. Blu ray movies look fantastic on the screen, which is glossy and very clear. A major selling point of this model is the sound system. It is by far the best set of speakers i have heard come out of a laptop.
This computer is also very fast with a Core 2 Duo and 4GB of ram, which have decently fast stock timings and allows Vista to run smoothly. The video card can also handle somewhat intense games if that's another thing you're looking for. The CineDash, which is the media control on the left side which is touch sensitive, is a very nice touch. It responds well and can be used for Acer Arcade (preinstalled) and also works with iTunes and Windows Media Player. It also includes a fingerprint scanner under the mousepad for a nice touch. Cooling was very important to me and this laptop did not disappoint. Running blu ray discs uses a lot of resources and after movies, the bottom is room temperature and cools off quickly. It's slightly raised in the back to allow the air to escape from underneath it and saving me money on a cooler.
There are some cons with this laptop as well. The hard drive comes standard partitioned in half already. One half is for the operating system and the other is for whatever else you want. This is slightly inconvenient but can be solved with a partition manager. This laptop also comes preloaded with a lot of programs, some useful and some not. Included in that are a slew of games and were annoying to uninstall. The battery life leaves more to be desired. It lasts only about 3 hours but thats what you get with all these bells and whistles.
Overall this is an amazing laptop with many media capabilities and multitasking opportunities to allow the user to have fun. I recommend this product as a knowledgeable computer user to everyone. [...]

A very well equipped multimedia laptop!
Just got this laptop from an electronics store and absolutely love it!
It runs quiet and cool, but the best feature is the Blu-ray (especially now that the format war is over). Since the Blu-ray player alone costs well over $300, it's a great addition. I'm glad the manufactures equipped the laptop with a WXGA+ screen that can really take advantage of the resolution. And the movies look absolutely gorgeous!
The other great features are the 2GB ram (ample for everyday needs), the Nvidia Geforce 8400 (handles most games very well), the huge 250 GB hard drive. The unit also comes with an ExpressCard/54 slot. Apparently, it can be used to add memory, graphics upgrades and security devices so it should be future proof. Also, the unit comes with Vista Premium instead of Vista Basic and I do prefer it. The two thinks missing from Basic are the fancy Aero interface and Windows Media Center. The Aero interface is a nifty 3D accelerated smoothly animating User Interface which really brings the screen to life. Without it, the desktop looks sort of plain and flat, and the whole OS is a little dull and not as fun. Windows Media Center is a real boon with its interface for using your PC to listen to music, watch video, record TV programs, etc. The manufacturer's likely had this in mind when they built the laptop as the different components complement each other really well.
The only thing that wasn't great was the battery life. For 17" laptops, 2-2:30 hours is average to above average so it's about par.
All in all, a great multimedia laptop which can play Blu-ray movies. I like it so much I think I might buy two!

Works very well
If you are looking for a bargain priced computer to use for some on-line surfing and as a word processor, or to keep your digital documents/pictures on, this is the one. Quick bootup, no hassles at all setting it up, and the keyboard and the touch pad are quite user friendly (i.e. fingers dont easily slide off the keys; touchpad not too sensitive, etc). For advanced computing, it would do you no good, but for $400 a fantastic bargain.

I like it
I got this on an Amazon sale and it was a great deal. I'm happy with Vista; haven't seen any problems with it. I've played an HD DVD on it with no problem. It does lag on the typing, but I haven't bothered with a fix for it yet. The only thing I would have liked is for the screen resolution to be a little higher; it's only 1280x800. It has a lot more ram, larger hard drive and faster than my HP laptop and was about 1/3 the price at the time I bought it.

good deal for decent graphics..contrary to other review has restore partition and software to create backup discs..both of which I've tested and work fine..actually has some decent software included dvd/cd burner,dvd producer etc..plays hd-dvd discs faultlessly..if you can get this at $699 or less it's a good deal
Annoyed Purchaser
When I started up this laptop I noticed that Vista was using nearly 1 gig of the ram. I also noticed that my typing was lagged. After spending a frustrating hour searching on the internet I found that this was a common problem with Acer latpops. The touchpad driver acer ships with this product doesn't work right and forces vista to use massive amounts of ram. Thankfully it's an easy enough fix and their are plenty of instructions how to on the internet.
If you buy this laptop, and don't get me wrong (it's a great deal for what you get), make sure you update the touchpad driver as soon as possible.
